In this series of carved wooden artist books Eryn Lewis represents different parts of a woman’s body. The texts contained therein chronicles moments of breakdowns in different relationships. Each book is a part and each part a different relationship. By investigating the moments and dynamics of the physicality of each body part, and the snapshots of lives within them, the books comprise woman, or the experience of women.

All the books have carved wooden covers and shaped boards as pages. They are each uniquely assembled using improvised Coptic bindings. Text and images are hand-rendered in strata of colors the interactions of which impart the emotional currents of the pieces. The act of carving is a meditation, an excavation, digging the bones and thoughts out of hiding. The intricate bindings are a process of taking account, understanding, feeling, sorting, coming to terms and committing.

The pieces are a carnal tapestry of remembrance and struggle, a catalog of hands and hearts, a genealogy of love, remembrance, regret and peace.
