Through making art, I process and embody my experience as a neurodivergent individual. Being born with both sensory integration disorder and dysgraphia has affected my ability to process visual and spatial information from a young age. As a small child, I used to slam my head against the ground. I didn’t do this because I was upset, I did it because I didn’t know where I was. I was lost, unable to reconcile the space where my body ended and the world began. As I grew, this confusion slowly dissipated, but my difficulties with fine motor and cognitive processes have remained.Struggling to form letters, draw neat lines and shapes, as well as organize objects and symbols, has led me to abstraction as a mode of expression. Composing a visual language of repeated forms, I infuse narrative in my work through charged symbols and stylized figures in turbulent abstract landscapes.
The series little guys depicts small cartoonish characters that persist in realms of emotional and physical uncertainty. Part self portrait and part fictional character, they introduce an element of humor and play into the serious realities of my anxiety, depression, and cognitive challenges. Through the rapid and repeated spawning of these figures, I process and question complex feelings in the form of self referential visual narratives.
