I have been creating art all my life.  I started out drawing.  Very detailed pictures of people.  I later graduated to paint-ing in oil, and have been using oil ever since.  I usually  paint really unusual subject matter, such as road kill and trash.  I work with only a few colors, but I manage to get quite a large palette.
