Landscape architecture taught me to think about the earth differently – to see not only what is right in front of my eyes, but also what is not. Because in order to create a thriving landscape – one that is healthy and sustainable – you need to understand what kind of soil and substrate you have, how water moves through the site, how the sun traverses overhead, and where the underground utilities are hidden. By considering these things, you gain perspective on the larger context for what you’re making, and how it integrates with the local environment.
In my art-making, I extend this thinking even further, imagining my landscapes in cross-section, reaching down into the core of the earth, and up into endless space.

“Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing underground
Into the blue again, after the money’s gone
Once in a lifetime, water flowing underground

Same as it ever was, same as it ever was…”
Talking Heads, Once in a Lifetime
