Healing has been on my mind a lot lately; healing our country from all the political divisiveness that’s tearing us apart, healing the earth from the devastating effects of climate change, and healing ourselves from mental or physical ailments that are plaguing us. This piece suggests the power in all of us to bring about positive change when we form an alliance with nature and all its magic that surrounds us. This is especially true of the spiritual relationship between humans and trees. In mythology and nature religions, the Ash tree is thought to have medicinal and mystical properties and is known for rebirth and healing. The figure in this piece (a self portrait circa 1992) depicts a Wicca or Pagan practitioner communing with the tree in a quest for healing. Assisted by her various “familiar” companions (usually an animal with which the practitioner has a spiritual or psychic bond), here’s hoping she can give rise to the transformation that’s needed for “The Healing”.
