Daydreams count! I don’t often have extremely memorable dreams.
Maybe I’m missing something but mine are usually murky, scatological, and often repetitive dealing with the usual mundane stuff…….you know; can’t find my way home, unprepared for exams or violence on conveyor belts. I often find my fantasies and imagination more at work while viewing something I’m painting that suggests something else and becomes either an unplanned part of what I’m working on or a new painting. This will occur frequently when I have a piece propped up against the wall and I’m gazing at it while lying down, nodding off, almost napping. New intriguing associations slip past my rational mind, entertaining and beckoning with hidden meaning. Later on I go looking for them on my canvas, but not directly, hoping they’ll appear in my peripheral vision coming from around a corner because they, like a dream, are elusive, not direct. After all, what are dreams but memories of things that never happened.
