Artists Statement:

Winter has always been a state of mind for me. The cold, the forecast of snow, the storms themselves, snow days, the change of perception the snow and the bare trees bring, the long winter nights when the wind howls and we appreciate being home, cooking dinner and being protected from those harsh elements that surround us throughout the evening into late night. Winter has a slower pace that allows me to look more carefully at what I have and have not done, a time of contemplation, and a time to appreciate those with whom I share this omnipresent cold season.

Creating art to match these thoughts has been an intriguing process. Creating a specific, (winter) mood takes thoughtful consideration. Plans were begun that constantly changed with each step forward. Stark, cold, a little foreboding, convincingly moody, and coloration that expressed my own feelings about what winter brings. What material would I use that would best convey my hopes for these pieces.

Often I set out to be whimsical, decorative, colorful, political or hazily representational and my thoughts proceed to the “drawing board” in some sort of straight forward manner. My final approach to “Winter Blues” landed me in some cold, gray  places I wanted to be…’Hope you get there too!
As always, thanks to Joan and Brian for giving us this space where we can express ourselves in the manner we choose.
