STATEMENT OF INTENTMy work is a reaction to my anxieties about taking up space: physical, public, domestic, gendered, intellectual, inter-personal. I use out-dated and overly specific modes of communication and text to create objects, spaces, and actionsthat use the language of defeat, incapability, and ineptitude. Many of my main interests fall within the realm of social contracts and mis/communication as a way to investigate class, accessibility, and gender. I use an appropriated mascu-line, blue collar aesthetic measured by stereotyped feminine processes and materials that are informed by my upbring-ing in terms of class and region. I use my personal experiences as a means to consider these intersections. This performance acts as a method of both self-destruction and self-love. The act of cutting hair is symbolic of letting go while also being a sign of a need for change. Cutting my own hair gives me complete control of how much I’m willing to give up. Hair is also a method of displaying femininity and status so the self-destruction of these to social constructs is a way for me to perform radical self-love.
