mixed media-image transfer with water color to paper, 20” x 16”, 2018, $395.00
As a photo-based mixed media artist I mix natural and digital art media with my images. I experiment with various techniques to create mood and texture that is not often apparent in a flat, two dimensional photograph. I transfer imagesto painted wooden surfaces or watercolor paper to achieve a unique effect as my photos become one-of-a kind pieces. Trees have always been a significant representational subject for me, and I have photographed them continuouslyover the years. Trees have a timeless quality and I often rework images I have taken years ago with new mixed media processes I discover. I photograph stark, black branches and transfer them to painted wooden panels that are painted with oil and cold wax. The basis for this series began when I began discovered that the color of the light of the sky at sunrise and sunset is so similar that it makes time seem interchangeable. I am fascinated by the fleeting variations of shifting shades of pinksand blues of the early morning and evening sky, and with these pieces I illustrate how time cannot be defined accordingto the color of the light. Time has always been an intriguing concept to me and by working on this series I attempt to comprehend this abstract and elusive concept. Although I have changed the colors of the sky in every piece, it is impossible to discern the actual time of day, and its ambiguity continuously intrigues and inspires me.
